Director's Welcome

Welcome to Oklahoma State University and to the Office of University Academic Services! Every university should have a place where all students feel comfortable going for help—whether it is for free tutoring for a course you are struggling in or for an answer to a question so simple you are almost embarrassed to ask (such as, “How do I read my class schedule, or how do I drop a course, or what majors are available at OSU?”).  We hope that place is UAS.

Started over 30 years ago as Freshman Programs and Services for undecided freshmen, UAS is now a resource office serving students campus-wide.  Whether they be alternative admission freshmen, probation students and those unable to declare their major, or undecided transfer students and those needing to adjust to the OSU setting, we have academic counselors and staff who are eager to talk to you and help solve your problems.  Our agenda is to help students find their way to success at OSU.

University Academic Services offers free tutoring by appointment from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday – Friday.  We also employ 50-60 honors and/or outstanding students each semester to serve as tutors, so come by if you are interested in being a tutor or getting tutored.

We also teach over a dozen sections of freshman orientation for our alternative admission/8% students who don’t quite meet regular admission requirements, along with UNIV 2001, “Academic Assessment and Evaluation,” for students on academic probation or those unable to declare their chosen major.  In addition, we teach a junior-level orientation course, UNIV 3110, for transfer students to help them assimilate into the OSU culture.

As a result of a $98,500 grant in 2005 from the State Regents to work with transfer students, UAS is now considered the “Transfer Student Resource Center” (TSRC), again an office for transfers to feel at home, request resources, and ask for help and answers to their questions.

UAS hopes to be a haven for new freshmen and minority students by offering mentors to all who request one through the Students Academic Mentor Program.  A long-established program of over 15 years, “SAM’s” have the welcoming spirit UAS wishes to display.

We are teachers and academic counselors and friends to students.  We can help you find a major if you are confused.  We can teach you study skills, policies and regulations if you are having problems.  We can get you help in those courses that are causing you problems.  But most of all, we can offer you a friendly setting where questions are encouraged.  Please stop by and say “hi.”  We want to get to know you.

Sincerely,
Martha McMillian, Ed.D.
