UAS Admissions Programs

Alternative Admissions Program
a special course, UNIV1111, Freshmen Orientation, is offered for these students to assist them in reaching their goals.

The Alternative Admissions Program allows a certain percentage (currently 8%) of each new freshman class to attend OSU without meeting all the regular admissions requirements, but who meet minimum criteria and show potential for success. Once admitted, a strong effort is made to monitor students' progress and to familiarize them with skills and attitudes that will contribute to their academic success. After remediating any deficiencies they might have and completing at least one semester of satisfactory work, students generally may transfer to the major of their choice.

Before attempting admission to this program, students must inquire with the Office of Admissions to discuss the minimum criteria required. Note: Under this program, students qualifying for the Oklahoma Higher Learning Assessment Program (OHLAP) may not be eligible for their full funding until their second semester at OSU.

How can I remove my curricular and performance deficiencies? There are two ways 1) satisfactorily completion of a 0-level course in the ACT area in which you are deficient at the Stillwater branch of Northern Oklahoma College or any other institution of higher education 2) through passage of a COMPASS Placement Test. Passage of UNIV 0133 will remove an English deficiency; UNIV 0123 will remove a Mathematics deficiency, UNIV 0111 will remove a lab science deficiency and UNIV 0143 will remove a reading deficiency. The computerized placement tests are offered free of charge at the OSU Testing Center, 111 North Murray Hall. You may also transfer COMPASS score results from any of the OSU branch campuses or from NOC Tonkawa. Upon passing an appropriate test, you may clear a deficiency; then college coursework in the discipline area may be attempted.

How much time do I have to remove a deficiency, and what are the consequences if I do not? In order to continue your education at OSU you must satisfactorily complete the required course in the area of your curricular deficiency within your first 24 hours of college-level coursework at OSU (excluding repeats, pass/fail and 0-level courses). If you do not remediate the deficiency during the specified time period, you must attend another institution until the work is completed. On the other hand, time limits are less restrictive for performance deficiencies. Remediation simply must be completed before a student may transfer to a college or enroll in college-level coursework in that area (e.g., UNIV 0123 must be completed with an "S" before enrolling in MATH 1483, 1493 or 1513). Please note that 0-level coursework cannot be used to meet graduation requirements. However, a curricular deficiency in history requires an additional history course beyond the required American History course-both of which may be used for college credit. There is no specific time period in which the coursework for remediation must be completed in history.

Am I on academic probation if admitted as an Alternative Admission student? No. Although you were "provisionally admitted," you are in good academic standing as long as you maintain a GPA within State Regents' minimum standards (0-30 hours attempted = 1.7; 31 hours or more attempted = 2.0). Your provisional status is removed if your GPA remains within an acceptable level and any curricular deficiency you might have is removed within the first 24 hours. If you have less than a 19 ACT in any of the four areas, you may have a performance deficiency and need to remediate in that area as well. Generally, such performance deficiencies are remediated before you transfer to an undergraduate college.

Who will monitor my progress and serve as my academic advisor while I am an Alternative Admission student? Advisors in the Office of Academic Services at OSU have been designated as responsible for monitoring your progress and for seeing that your deficiencies are remediated and a 2.0 GPA in a minimum of 24 hours is achieved. Then you may declare a major in one of the six colleges. This is not to say that coursework in Agriculture, Arts & Sciences, Business, Education, Engineering and Human Environmental Sciences cannot be taken. It simply means that information on all majors will be given to you and more monitoring will be provided as an Alternative Admission Student.

What services should my parents and I expect from the Office of University Academic Services? More intrusive, one-on-one academic advising takes place in UAS. In addition, free tutoring is available through the Paul Milburn Tutoring Program. Special orientation courses are required, and follow-up midterm grades will be done. These are all in a caring, fun, and supportive atmosphere where self-discipline and responsible decision-making are encouraged.
